About the event
This moderate out and back hike, beginning at The Malcolm Hotel on Sunday, September 14th, is approximately 9 kilometers long and has a 180 meter elevation gain.
After walking through Spring Creek Mountain Village, we will proceed past the roundabout, east along Highway 1A, turn north and under the Trans-Canada Highway, then uphill along Cougar Creek.
The hike features the newly completed flood protection dam, located approximately 600 meters north of the community of Cougar Creek. The dam is 10 stories high (34 m), has an impressive spillway carved through mountain rock and includes massive steel grates to catch boulders and trees.
The hike ends just past the dam, at Cougar Canyon, a popular sport-climbing area, where some of the first climbs were established in the 1970s and 1980s. Rock faces are usually teaming with climbers.
